Evans Cemetery

Clay Township, Wayne County, Indiana

The Evans family cemetery is located at 7308 Smoky Row Road on the farm of Paul and Mary Hartman. This farm was first deeded in 1814 from the United States to Joseph Evans. The cemetery has at least thirteen graves, all believed to be members of the Evans family. It is being maintained by the Hartmans and the township. The following is a list of the names on the gravestones:

  1. In memory of Samuel Evans who departed this life Aug. 3rd, 1824, ages 29 years, 3 mo. and 7 days.
  2. In memory of Amy Evans, Consort of Joseph Evans, Jr., who departed this life April 29th, 1835, aged 30 years, 6 months & 17 days.
  3. Infant daughter of W. & J. Evans, died June 5, 1848.
  4. Maria, Wife of John Evans, died Dec. 3, 1850, Age 27 yr. 5 m. 28 d.
  5. William Evans, Born Aug. 9, 1825, Died Aug. 21, 1853, Age 28 years & 12 days.
  6. Oliver H., Son of John & Elizabeth Bean, Born Oct. 13, 1846, Died Feb. 15, 1854
    The flower that sweetly blooms today
    May died and fade tomorrow.
    Thus earthly hopes do pass away,
    And leave behind them sorrow.
  7. Joseph, son of Ezra & Marnon Thorne, Age 8 m. & 20 days.
  8. Charles, son of Ezra & Marnon Thorne, departed this life ?, ? years, 8 months.
  9. In memory of an infant son of Joseph and Amy Evans.
  10. An infant daughter of B. & R. Saterthwaite.
  11. In memory of an infant son of J. B. & P. E. Stevenson
  12. An unreadable stone made of fossil rock. Found in fence row and not in ground.
  13. Foot stone with no head stone.
