Taking into consideration studies that have shown the impact of art on decreased pain and improved patient satisfaction, the new Reid Hospital incorporated the work of local and national artists into the design of the hospital.

Commissioned Art in Production for New Reid

An artwork committee that has been working for five years is seeing its labor come to fruition in the design and creation of two custom pieces to be featured in the New Reid.

Working with project architect HDR’s interior designer Marcia Vanden Brink, the committee
includes community members Shaun Dingwerth, Julia May, Ed Thornburg and JoAnne Sobol. Reid employees on the committee are Charlene Shopp, Food & Nutrition Services; Erin Russell,
Rehabilitation Services; Andrea Lee, Occupancy Planning; Angie Dickman, New Business Development; Randy Kirk, Reid Foundation; and Ted Sobol and Barry MacDowell, Administration.

Some members of the committee were on hand to select art for the Outpatient Rehabilitation
Services building. Russell said that group reviewed evidenced-based studies of the impact of art on decreased pain and improved patient satisfaction. In particular, she said, natural environments and soothing colors in seascapes and landscapes tended to have the most positive effect.

Russell said she enjoyed the opportunity to participate and that “everyone on the committee has been open to others’ ideas.”

When it came to planning art for the Outpatient Care Center and inpatient hospital, “The first direction was to choose an artist who could create a quality, large, three-dimensional or sculptural piece,” said Thornburg, gallery director, curator of art and an art professor at Indiana University East.

The group looked at works by several artists and narrowed the field to two. Three members of the committee then traveled to Cincinnati and Atlanta, GA, to view the finalists’ work.
Rob Fisher, Bellefonte, PA was selected to create an aluminum and stainless steel suspended sculpture above the Outpatient Care Center entrance. Anne McGinn, LaGrange, IL, is weaving the wall hanging that will be a focal point of the lobby area.

Additional smaller paintings and sculpture will be purchased from local artists.
