For those who are new to this area, or new to gardening, here are some generalized guidelines to get you started:

Richmond/Wayne County is generally considered to be in Zone 5b for plant hardiness.

You might be able to use Zone 6 plants, depending upon the harshness of our winter during a particular season and the protection they receive from the surroundings.

Tender plants should be set out after Mother's Day when the last chance of frost has passed.

Cool weather vegetation can be planted earlier, for example, peas are usually planted around St. Patrick's Day.

Wayne County

Richmond Rose Garden - in Glen Miller Park on National Road 40 East in Richmond. Volunteer here to learn how to care for roses from local experts.

Cope Environmental Center - environmental center offering programs, demonstrations, and research. They have a wide range of conifer plantings.

Hayes Arboretum - "a living museum", offering nature programs, hiking facilities, and nature center. A good source for studying herbaceous plants and native trees.

Organizations

Cooperative Extension Service - Indiana has a wonderful, free Cooperative Extension Service, supported by Purdue University. Our local extension agent can answer many of your gardening questions. The Cooperative Extension office is located in the Kuhlman Building at the Wayne County Fairgrounds, 861 Salisbury Road North, Richmond.
