Townsend Community Center

...providing service to the community since 1921. The current building was erected in 1964.

Townsend Community Center provides an after school program, and a summer program for youth. It also offers an open gym for young adults as well as an adult pottery class. Townsend Center is the site for two GED classes, one Ivy Tech Community College class and Amigos English as a second language class.

Tenants include Head start and Amigos. The building is rented out for parties, dances, concerts, meetings, dinners, programs, tournaments, etc. Several groups that meet here on a regular basis. Townsend Center has a very diverse clientele of ethnicity not just primarily African-American. Our by line is "Still here, Still serving, Still needing you!

Oliver P. Morton, who served as the 14th Governor of Indiana during the American Civil War, was a Wayne County native. His family home still stands along the National Road on the west side of Centerville.
