A birthright Quaker, Mote was born in West Milton, Ohio in 1840. A nephew of
Marcus Mote, he moved to Richmond in 1870 where he and his brother conducted
a photography business (Mote Brothers, Artists and Photographers) for
sixteen years. He received art instruction from Harry Hilliard and Barton
Hays of Indianapolis. Like his uncle, Alden specialized in portrait
painting. One of his best examples is a portrait of tin-plate king, Daniel
Reid, located in the lobby of Reid Health.
