"On Tuesday evening March 6, 1883, Uncle Billy Faucett died after lingering several months. He was an Englishman by birth, and was drafted to serve in the war with Napoleon Bonaparte, who was taken prisoner before Uncle Billy was in any engagement. He had lived in this county many years and married and raised his family here; had been a member of the U. B. Church twenty five years and was as a shock of corn, ready to be garnered in his eighty-ninth year. His has been an eventful life." (He and Rachel are bur. in South Cem. - Greens Fork. Rachel was the dau. of Jonas, b. England, and Rachel (Lewellyn, b. Wales) Hatfield. The Hatfield family came to this area around 1812.) Uncle Billy was the immigrant ancestor of all the Faucetts bur. in this cemetery.

(A clipping saved by Mrs. Anna Stackhouse, mother of Earl Stackhouse and of Thelma Stackhouse Anderson, reads in part; "Nancy Finch was born in Preble Co. Ohio, Nov-28-1910. She was m. at the age of 18 to George Young. To them was born one daughter, Mrs. Mary Jane Cranor. Her husband only lived two years and then she came to Indiana and made her home with an uncle near Greensfork. After a few years they moved to the neighborhood of Laport, Ind, where she was m. to Wm. Finch. They came to live near Sugar Grove. Her husband lived but eight years and for 52 years she has been a widow. To them were born two sons and one daughter. She joined the Methodist Church with a pioneer class that worshiped at the Bailey school house (intersection of Sugar Grove and Wm. E. Oler Roads.) Afterward on account of residing near the Bethel church (United Brethren - located on N.W. corner of Jacksonburg and Wm. E. Oler Roads.) she transferred her membership there.....For thirty years she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Emeline Cole." (See Cole)

(Family records state that John was a starch maker in Ireland. Starch was made from potatoes and when that crop failed during the "potato famine", he went to Scotland. While there he met and married Ellen Dunbar. She is thought to have died before he and their sons came to the United Sates at the same time and in company with the Wm. Sharp family, both of whom came to this area. John found employment at a starch factory in Richmond (just across the road from the present Reid Hospital) and later bought a farm in the Sugar Grove vicinity. Here he bought and trained western horses and was killed when on of the horses knocked him down and trampled him.)

(In 1913, John was employed by Standard Oil and sent to Rumania to work in their oil fields there. He was accompanied by his wife and small daughter, Mary Louise. In 1916, when Rumania entered World War I, they had to flee. Grace was suspected of being a spy and getting out was difficult, but they made their way north through Russia into the Arctic Circle countries. Two months after leaving Rumania they arrived safely in New York City and called their anxious families two days before Thanksgiving. Some time later John was inducted into the U. S. Army.)

LAMB

Learning who many of the Lambs buried at Sugar Grove Cemetery were has taken much research. Data from Kenneth J Nicholson of Mesa, Arizona, and from Robert Peirce of near Dalton, Ind., has been of immense value. Several descendents of Thomas and Hannah (Lewis) Lamb are interred here (Thomas and Hannah are buried at Williamsburg.) Joseph Lamb and many of his family are also buried at Sugar Grove. Apparently Thomas and Joseph were cousins. Individuals are listed as belonging to the (Thomas family) or the (Joseph family). The possible relationship is charted on the next page, and is a part of a chart by Robert Peirce.

(I have the same information from Howard P. Addison - Addison Family Researcher. Robert Peirce has her name as Lydia Adamson. FFW)

The 1815 Tax List shows a Joseph Lamb
in Capt. Swaim's District (NW part of Randolph Co., and adjacent to Guilford Co.) he with 95 acres, smallest of 15 Lamb farms. Largest was Albert Lamb with 500 acres.

The 1820 Census of Census of Randolph
Co. N.C. shows Joseph Lamb with 98 acres on Polecat Creek which runs south out of Guilford Co. near Jamestown, value $200. There are 12 Lambs enumerated all on Polecat Creek, highest value $700., lowest $100. Four Lambs did not own land. There was 1 white poll on each farm. Polecat Creek is a tributary of Deep River, Quaker Country. End of quote.

Mary Ann Loy. A dau., Harriet, was born in 1842 in Ohio, and a son, Amos was b. in 1848 in IN. Nothing further is known of Mary Ann. In the 1860 Census, Joseph and Amos were listed with the Daniel Strickler family, Clay Twp. Harriet was living with the Wm. Fox family, Jefferson Twp. Harriet m. Richard Faucett. Amos eventually became a dentist in Detroit, MI. In the 1870 Census Joseph owned land in Clay Twp., and was living next farm to Harriet and Richard. An article in the Feb-18-1874 issue of THE FRIENDLY VISITOR, predecessor of THE HAGERSTOWN EXPONENT, stated that Joseph Long had drowned while attempting to ride horseback across the rain swollen Greens Fork creek, a mile or so north of Greens Fork (then Washington) and close to where he lived.)
